Some of them might but I think in general it would be better for the immortals to actually foster this desire depending on how easy it was to become immortal. If it was affordable to the average person it would cause a huge glut in the population. That would have to be managed somehow, immortals would also compete with other immortals in pretty much everything, simply because they have the time to gather resources and knowledge but that would go against mortals as well, basically everybody who was anybody would be immortal, they would be an aristocracy and that would bread animosity which feeds back to what you said, so then if it was nearly impossible to become immortal the elite would actually encourage it so that the mortal population did not see them as the enemy who rules over them but as a target to reach one day even if it is next to impossible.
