I think I sympathize with anon's perception of discouragement. L23 refuted him without giving much of the background history of that mentality. Sounds like a wet blanket.

Especially to someone who is a non native speaker who'd be reliant on dictionary definitions I don't think he was using the word out of pure desire to sound smart and self important.
