Syria Thread - Iranian Backed Edition Bernd 02/22/2024 (Thu) 21:33 [Preview] No. 51681 [Reply] [Last 50 Posts]

Nothing much going on in Syria anymore. Bit of ISIS I see on the map, and the SAA bombarding rebels on the north east. Beside that Israel is constantly attacking into Syria, targeting Iranian backed terrorists, and Iranian backed militias, and apparently Iranian militias themselves.
In Israel, the IDF still wrestling with some Iranian backed, dirty, barefeet, stone throwing kids since October... Where Yom Kippur and Six-Day Wars disappeared? Anyway. In Gaza they bombing Iranian backed Hamas, in Lebanon the Iranian backed Hezbollah. Sometimes they have a cease fire to release hostages as the Iranian backed Qatar negotiates it.
From Yemen, the Iranian backed Houthis raiding the shipping lanes with drones and whatnot.
In Ukraine the Iranian backed RAF/RuAf is on the attack. The initiative is theirs, AFU tries holding their trenches, forts, and foxholes. I heard couple of interesting things today, but would need some drawing and look up possible sources.

I found something. Well nothing that outright say a deal had happened. But a situation where we could hypothesize a deal happening.
Here's this CNN article:
https://edition.cnn.com/2024/03/09/politics/us-prepared-rigorously-potential-russian-nuclear-strike-ukraine/index.html
It's basically an advertisement for that book, The Return of Great Powers. Available on libgen, and I got it too. While the book is longer, but in that particular topic it basically writes the same as the article - I've only skimmed it so I overlooked lotsa details - I search Kherson and rolled through the pages. What I can tell that it polishes the rod of the US govt. and tells us that Putin and Co. are stupid so the US won against an inferior opponent, very impressive.

The story in short:
Kharkov offensive was a huge setback for the Russians, and when the Kherson offensive started they started to panic. Their worries was twofold:
1. they were scared losing Kherson;
2. they were scared that their troops will be steamrolled by the Ukrainians;
So this would have been a great debacle for them, and they were seriously considering to use of tactical nuke if both happened. They started to circulate Ukraine dirty bomb story in case they have to cover up a nuclear strike.
But heroic US diplomacy and secret services were vigilant. So they and Sholz went to Modi and Xi Jinping, and bullied them into going to Putin and pressure him not to use the nukes.
World Saved again by timely and resolute US intervention.

Now.
We can speculate that yes losing lots troops, equipment and key city was actually uncomfortable, and the use of nukes are kinda sorta are always on table, so these offensives could have triggered the use of them. So they could make a deal that they make Ukraine halt and give time for an orderly retreat, and Russia don't use nukes.
This doesn't sound very convincing, but rounds out the story above and offers something to negotiate with.

I have heard that but I don't know that I believe it. I think the most likely explanation was simply that both sides knew that a fight over Kherson would be bloody and miserable for them both.
The Russians were not going to lose their army but fighting in such conditions would have meant their army would be poorly supplied and that many Russian assets such as aviation and helicopters would have to be redirected to resupply the Russians over the river and also to provide air support for them. It could have ended in a situation where the Russian army was stuck in Kherson city, terribly supplied but on the other side the Ukrainians would have to fight in bloody urban combat against an enemy with their backs to the wall, all the while being hammered by Russian airpower and from Russian artillery on the other side of the river. It would be bad for both of them, and also bad for the city itself and the people living there. Most likely it would have ended with a permanent but poorly supplied Russian bridgehead located in Kherson city and then a permanent force of Ukrainians stationed around the city to keep them in check.

Germany pays. To US. Amerrrica continues to siphon the wealth from Europe into her own pocket.

Now this one, I'd like to read in full:
https://www.janes.com/osint-insights/defence-news/air/special-report-no-time-to-lose-as-lessons-from-ukraine-force-the-pace-in-electronic-warfare
>after decades of disinvestment in electronic warfare (EW), NATO now had to step up a gear and be prepared to counter a grinding Russian EW onslaught. “We're now seeing [in Ukraine] the most dense and dangerous electromagnetic operating environment we've ever seen,” he said. “Russia never stopped doing EW, it never stopped continuing to invest. We need to learn from the Ukrainians who are fighting for their lives and their country.”
>the fact is that the conflict is witnessing a highly dynamic ‘war in the ether' unprecedented in its intensity
Electronic warfare is more important then ever. The real countermeasure against drones, and against anti-drone capabilities are these equipment.

Justice Minister Moro resigned. He is immensely popular and was doing a good job. There have been high-profile arrests and in 2019 the number of murders dropped by 10 thousand compared to the previous year, a decrease of a fifth. This is a result of many factors: in the Northeast cooperation among cartels reduced violence, but the reduction happpened in other states. Legislation wasn't a factor as there was next to no real change in this regard. He retains much prestige despite the scandal with his leaks, eternal hate from the left due to being Lula's nemesis and repeated disempowerment of the anti-corruption struggle by Congress and the Supreme Court.
What caused this was Bolsonaro's elimination of Federal Police director Maurício Valeixo, who had been picked by Moro. In his final address he noted that:
-There was no legitimate reason for this as he had been effective in his post
-This was a violation of the promise Bolsonaro made upon naming him Minister, that he'd have freedom to handle subordinates
-Bolsonaro also intends to replace a subordinate of the director, the Rio de Janeiro superintendent, and possibly other superintendents, which goes against his spirit of giving autonomy to subordinates
-A replacement now would create confusion and harm the Federal Police's functioning
-Bolsonaro personally told him this was a political choice

Why political? He did not say this straight, but what everyone says is that it was to protect Bolsonaro's sons from investigation, and hence why the Rio de Janeiro superintendent is also involved. Their corruption accusations are petty for Brazilian standards but what's bigger are accusations they might be tied to militias. As always Bolsonaro's sons are his priority. This behavior doesn't come out of nowhere as he has few contacts in Brasília, having lived his career in the sidelines, and many reasons to be distrustful. Moro isn't someone he has a reason to distrust but his sons still came first.

This really activates the almonds. And really typical behaviour, characteristic to Eastern Europe.
It's obvious no previous methods succeeded fixing the economy so now that someone wants to try something new - which might not even work out but won't make things worse - they make sure it fails before even trying, in their fear that it works out.
There might be some, who are interested in Argentine's economy never recovering, but others certainly sabotaging fixing attempts simply due their Pride.

Well Decrees of Necessity and Urgency work in an odd way.
Basically the executive power can send changes to the government without need of the congress. These changes technically last about 3 months until they're treated in congress, and if they're approved they stay, if they don't they're dismissed
>Hopefully Milei had time to prepare an alternative route to implement the fixing.
Basically he's gonna send the DNUs again but instead of having all the changes in one they would all be split in different ones. Making it harder/more time consuming to treat them.

>There might be some, who are interested in Argentine's economy never recovering, but others certainly sabotaging fixing attempts simply due their Pride.
It's not really their pride, a lot of the changes that are being sent would cut drastically public spending, which is where a lot of money is funneled towards politicians pockets.

Okay, so the DNUs are a defined and regulated tools of government, I thought this is the name of his reform package sent to the legislation to vote on it - and the senate vetted out before it could have landed in the commons. So instead basically means ruling by decrees in time of necessity and urgency.
Ehh, Pride is larger than Greed.
>cut public spending
I think this term is a bit misleading. Governments still have to spend the income (taxes, tariffs, loans and printed money), they just spend it less on public institutions, bureaucracy. It's a reshuffling the percentages. They could cut back on the print and the loans, then shrink the spending in some areas.

Europeen Parliamentary Elections is ongoing from 6 to 9 of June. This is when us Europeons cast our ballots to get rid of the most useless cunts in our country for 5 years by sending them to Brussels.
I'm not sure about other countries but here one topic, frankly the major topic is the Ukraine war. War or Peace!
Fun thing, this was mentioned by Wyatt of DPA, that the Ukrainian Defense Ministry does not give out reports these days, and he suspects it might be because of the "peace conference" and Ukrainian govt. want less bad news to talk about. I hit up DW to read about the peace conference, they sure mention it, but the "Ukraine" headline disappeared from the navigation bar at the top. This made me think maybe, the thing is hushed now because everything is a propaganda, and it is common practice that during the days of elections the campaigns are paused. Therefore they shut down UDM communications too for a bit.

I picked this image because that hand placing the ballot into the urn looks like a dispirited man gave up all hopes, or a peon bowing to their masters. Granted a bit too squiggly legs.

I just realised something... something spooky as fuck.

You know how sumo is derived from some ancient rituals? How it was performed in shrines, to appease the kami, to ensure prosperity? It was only later professionalised, and is now performed on a national level by salaried wrestlers, but there are still many religious elements, from how the ring is consecrated by a priest before each tournament, yokozuna entering the ring with that big white rope around his belt, to wrestlers actually throwing salt into the ring before each bout as a means of consecration. It is a deeply religious ritual, somehow performed to appease the kami for the entire nation of Japan. Kinda like how the ancient Olympic Games were performed on temple grounds, and were a form of vitalist worship of Greek gods.

You know when's the last time sumo wasn't performed as scheduled? March 2011. The March of the earthquake and tsunami that rekt Japan. But guess what? The tournament was cancelled a month before. Because of some match-fixing scandal. Yep, that's right. And the earthquake happened 2 days before the tournament was scheduled.

The earthquake happened because the sumo ritual wasn't performed. Because the kami weren't appeased. They were pissed and caused the earthquake as a warning.

Haven't written much about this tournament, but perhaps it's not too late. Heh.
So the makuuchi yusho was won by Onosato. He achieved this feat on his seventh (7th) tournament since he enrolled into pro-sumo. He took the place from Takerufuji, who did it on his 10th tournament in March. Considering the 3 tournament difference, it might not be possible much earlier. Perhaps on the 6th. Onosato could have won the previous. Maybe 5 bashos could be possible. 2 complete domination in makushita, then 2 in juryo, and then on first tournament in makuuchi - bam yusho.
Onosato's winning bout was against Abi. He successfully held against Abi's initial charge, then pushed on quick, herding Abi out with ease. Wasn't a sensational bout for the audience, but was a climactic for him and his family. His dad cried, just as Onosato when he went out and back to the changing room or wherever they go after the matches.
12-3 is a good start for an ozeki run. He had a bit of luck with almost everyone being injured, but I think he has the potential to get 21 points in the next to bashos (a 10 and an 11 should be enough). I'm kinda hyped.

Should enter the new year without mentioning, and frankly celebrating the fact that Hungary is out on the UEFA Euro Cup 2024!
We came out on the top of group G without suffering 1 defeat. Such as this had not happened since the 1972!!!! Extraordinary excite!
We landed in Group A, and will face Germany, Scotland, and Switzerland. Germany is the absolute boogeyman here, and they host the Euro Cup, which will make 'em press the doorbell so hard, they will mow each opponent down.
Which means we'll compete with the Scotts and the Swiss for the second place. Which won't be a joke, but with them - at the moment considering the quality of the Hungarian team - are on more or less level, so while no matches can be taken granted, we can say we have a chance.

In our team's recent successes the key figure is Marco Rossi who manages our so called "National Eleven". Absolute legend. God Bless Him! He got his citizenship in October, I hope it won't end his fortune.

Enhanced Edition makes it possible to play this classic DnD based crpg on modern steel, fixes bugs, changes some rules, adds new NPCs with quests, new items, two new expansions (The Black Pits - arena fight generator?, and Siege of Dragonspear - which is a module for the original story, taking part between BG1 and BG2). It seems okay all in all.

I put Order of Battle WWII by Slitherine Software back. Previously I tried the tutorial, now I started the Africa Corps campaign.
The game looks like a carbon copy of Panzer General, and it feels kind of a remake, I'm sure the inspiration was there very much. It implements things differently, like arty units range is many more hexes (like in People's General), and has additional features (like can buy kinda talents for your campaign for the battle group you command which effects every unit), which are okay.
As for the campaign, haven't finished with the first scenario yet. Botched the first try (nothing bad, I just fucked up unit composition), the second went well until I lost attention and it turned out just moving units forward ad hoc without a plan, and now it's kind of a mess (although I'm winning at towards at the end - playing on second easiest level however...). I might restart it again. I get to know the features and how things are done. I've no idea where it shows how much ammo and fuel a unit has for example.
I might try some other campaign too.

So. After a couple of maps (and restarts) later. It's a good game.
There are features to get used to for sure. Like artillery don't defend units around them (but AT do help). Or the exit points - and enter points that can serve as exit.
Lot depends on the designer, editor of a map, if events are planned for it, sidegoals defined - and rewards for them -, and if its clear what is expected and should be done.
One thing that bugs me: can't tell which are the main goals, the hexes that needs to be occupied. As far as I can see there is nothing that indicates a hex with elevated importance.

Previous one is autosäging.

Wanna watch The Longest Yard, the original Burt Reynolds movie.
I only see two remakes, the Mean Machine with Vinnie Jones, and the Adam Sandler comedy from 2005. Probably the only good Adam Sandler movie. It's greatest selling point is the catchy tunes played in the background and the supporting cast. Judging by the screenshots it follows the original story quite tightly. The Mean Machine is adapted to the circumstances of a Bri'is prison and normal football. It was entertaining too.
One more remake was made, and Egyptian one: Captain Masr in 2015. Not sure if it's available anywhere, or has any English dubs or subs. Also features normal football.

Watched the movie The Ambus/Al Kameen.
It's a recent (2021) war movie about an irl event, Emirati soldiers were ambushed by Yemeni rebels three years prior.
The scope is small. The story focuses on a handful of characters from a platoon, some other from a higher level formation, and a couple of rebels (eg. their chief and the sniper). Most of it plays in a canyon, they show bit from the camp, a corner here and there, and the command and control center.
The pace switches back and forth, the rapid chaos of the combat vs. the quiet conversations inside the MRAPs. The combat gradually escalates.
I don't think it is too realistic, but it tries to be. Equipment, weapons, and their use (I liked how the sniper was played out, the death was written poorly tho). The RPG should destroy an MRAP I think. While against tanks their value is not really in penetration (but apparently they can from certain angles).
The director is French so I'm not sure how the movie actually represents the Emirati view, or way of thinking.
The acting was not good, but passable, I've seen worse.
All in all it was cool-ish. More like a curiosity as an UAE movie, like Damascus Time (which is Iranian).

I'm looking for a car but I don't know much about them. I am thinking of a car like a Fiat 500 or a VolksWagon Beetle. What other cars are there like this, cars that are small so they are easy to park and don't use much fuel but that also look interesting and nice.

I wonder if the routing Korean units could have been stopped and recruited to do fortification works, and perhaps create some reserve from those who are willing to fight. But ultimately Chinese were stopped so.
Bombing own/allied units is a surprisingly common phenomenon.

Particularly for the US, what was that WW2 Joke again? Something like,
When the British fly over the Germans duck, when the Germans fly over the British duck, when the Americans fly over everybody ducks.

Ack bernds, the junior developer we hired just ruined the entire code base. I had to spend a long tiem fixing everything up and my boss got angry at me for things not working. So me and my boss just went and agreed that we should just let him go, after explaining to him why the junior dev crashed all the code.

I gave the junior a lot of code feedback and best practices advice, but he never listened to me and did everything all crazy like. Some people just don't wanna hear when you talk with them.

I also was suppose to be getting a new position and raise soon, but nothing really came of it, YET. Some people in charge of handling that are on paternal leave, so dunno what's going to happen next. Maybe I'll wait.?

Those are all just routine habits everyone forgot their origin, and circumstances that called them into existence might not exist. Or was a misunderstanding in the first place.
