Files have an expiration date? Anonymous 02/01/2024 (Thu) 11:28 [Preview] No. 19055
Is there an expiration date for the uploads?
As in, are the uploaded files pruned from the site after some time? If yes, how much is that time?
I'm asking because some old boards sometimes have images missing

some examples:
with /cure/ the images not showing appears to be more of an issue with the OP preview images being bugged, but the images are still there if opened as single files
/cure/ was active in the 2016-2017 years
/out/ is a better example, all the images are broken, is that something which happens over time eventually to all boards?
/out/ was active in the 2017-2018 years
an other case of broken images

What I really want to understand out of this is:
for how many years a file uploaded on any board on endchan can reliably be accessible to anyone?

The file being accessible on a technical point of view alone, and not because it was removed manually by someone.
(assuming that file and its thread aren't slid into deletion, assuming the file isn't removed by either the board owner and site admins, assuming the file isn't deleted by a new board owner after the board is claimed, assuming the file is just left alone to take dust, how many years can the file survive by default site settings?)

found an other one
there are probably many of these from the 2016-2017 years range

Orphans are pruned.
If all the posts with the same media are deleted, that creates an "orphan".
>How much is that time?
Within weeks. Kinda random.

There was a botched migration in 2018 or so which resulted in database corruption. There is a thread about it here on operate somewhere. The result were bunch of lost media, broken files, some just left without thumbnails.
Well, that's about it.

I see, thanks for the answers

Keep in mind that imageboard content were intended to be ephemeral, and while small chans (including Endchan) can keep data for a long time, they aren't safe storage places. Tho perhaps safer than the fashionable normie cloud storage...
We don't really touch even abandoned boards, because we know users expect their stuff to be here when (if) they return.

So looking at this in an empirical way,
the current record for file retention is: 6 years
(from 2024 to 2018)

And that time is currently limited to 6 years only because of site bugs/errors and not because of any site policy

yep, it's a stretch to rely on imageboards for archiving, pure archives have better file duration, bigger archiving space, and better organizing tools, but also less public visibility, and often also stricter content policies actively removing content
it's a trade off, as for many things

>We don't really touch even abandoned boards, because we know users expect their stuff to be here when (if) they return.
That's something which is always nice to see, as it's becoming rarer to find online old sites and ancient messages from people even decades ago, internet has become a place focusing only on the now, with no past nor future
