I ask this because I always thought of onionshare as a file hosting site using Tor that you need to post links in order to share files.

True, but if you decide to use anything like p2p file sharing or bit torrents you should be doing it on a "burner laptop" that should absolutely not be used for anything else, let alone hold anything personal or connected to anything private at all. I won't even put my first name on my burner laptop's OS and I always ALWAYS use a VPN when connecting to the internet (wired only, no wifi!) If I ever get hacked I have plenty of offline backups of all my media.
