Before the passing of income taxes and the normalization of excise taxation, the USA made almost all of its money from tariffs. Trump may have attempted to bring america back to this foundational taxation system.

Starting off these days paycheck to paycheck would be very difficult and your options would be extremely limited. I would recommend you start with buying a couple of totes (to seal from vermin and bugs) and start stashing bags or bulk rice, spice, beans, peas, grits, pasta, powdered foods like mashed potatoe mix. Every so often start adding canned foods to your pantry and date them per purchase. Build a surplus. When you build your surplus in food, start focusing on building surplus elsewhere like extra underwear, extra shoes/boots, extra sanitation supplies, etc. Now do this year after year after year if you can financially manage it overtime. Just know, at some point, you will need firearms to protect it all when a crisis hits.

You'll also want some totes of sugar, flour and oatmeal. The best food storage tip I can give you is storing non-canned non-frozen foods in sealed totes and dating them all. You will need to rotate them, you cannot stock them forever, you have to use them before they go bad and re-stock next time you go shopping. The goal is to maintain a surplus of edible foods. Do not mind the store's expiration date either, typically canned foods can last for many years past expiration. You will want to make sure you eat your foods within a 4 year period from purchase and replace them.

thanks for sharing your wisdom. i'm pretty good on keeping a surplus of everything except for the thing you talked about, food. i can't buy the shelvestable stuff like rice, noodles, oatmeal, sugar, flour lentils, cans and stuff like that because

then i'd have to eat it eventually or throw it away. i only eat fresh plants raw. the only thing i can think of is try to be more into sprouting and keep a lot of sprouting seeds because then when i have water (which i foolishly don't keep any of), i can just sprout myself some food.

it is hard to keep a surplus of nuts and seeds because they don't last long. lol i have dried seaweed, that could be something for me. dried tomatoes i also use for sauces, raisins i use for nuts, dates i use a lot but i tried keeping them for a long time and they lose quality quick.

the most important thing i am currently leaving on the table is water. i have a water destillation machine but it needs 700 watts to run, gives me one liter per hour of destilled water so i could use any old water i find. i need to store some.

Have a rain water collection system, if it is prohibited by bureaucratic scumbags you might need to conceal it from people though. There are also atmospheric water generators too but they require routine filter replacement every year of use.

The reason I liked canned foods btw, is they are great for long term storage plus rodents and bugs cannot get into canned foods. They're also very easy to stack and rotate. Building a surplus of canned food is a great way to stock up a pantry, some canned foods last up to 10 years. Just this year I opened up some canned butter from the year 2013 and it was still good.
