Anyone know why Overman King Gainer had consistently good to even awesome animation despite it not being Gundumb?

It's probably to make up for the fact that he looks like a goofy rastafari jellyfish.

I dig his design to be honest. And honestly I even love the goofy aspects of it, like the pouch he uses to store bullets. The design is just so fresh to me for some reason I can't explain. And this comes from someone who absolutely despises dreadlocks. Also this anime was the second I've seen use artificial muscle for mechs so appropriately and interesting. The first of course being Aurora Battler Dunbine.

I certainly think that King Gainer was the last good series that Tomino did and might even be Sunrise's last entry in to the old time mecha genre.

As far as me enjoying it or not, I guess it was ok. The show was about the MC getting to the final battle with gundam 0079 hijinks sprinkled throughout for comic relief. The OP is a keeper though.

Doesn't it look like he's cutting through that Dunbine unit you posted in the OP?

If you haven't seen the show yeah, I can't totally see someone confusing it for a Dunbine. I wonder if King Gainer is Tomino's attempt at making a less murder filled Dunbine.
