I'm rewatching Pacific Rim.

Holy shit how could they put a 30 something woman as the babe in the movie.

No surprise it wasn't popular in Japan.

The loli is great though.

Does this movie have exactly the same plot as Gunbuster? I can't remember.

The Diebuster OVA post-2000? Not the slightest.

No, the original OVA from 1988, where the main character's (MC) dad gets killed in the prologue, there's a long training montage, MC turns out to be the best at fighting space monsters, we learn sempai is dying from his time serving with MC's dad, MC has to go blow up space with a giant bomb to stop the alien threat.

Then I would say yes by that description. Sounds pretty accurate to pacific rim, but that's because it sounds pretty accurate to a few dozen Japanese monster movies and Michael Bay's Armageddon. The dadcrifice just happens in different spot of the timeline but becomes realized in the same spot of the timeline. When the stakes are high and we can be expected to act surprised and shit. (Commander Tyrone hurt his health off screen, while commander The Guy From Moonlighting hurt his fee fees).

This is not to downplay lazy writing in either of these movies, but in all of these movies. Somebody has to be the chosen one, something has to blow up, and somebody's daddy has to die "tragically" after asking for it all their life so the next generation may follow his lead into the meat grinder. There's not so many ways to spin that.
