Random Cat facts

Cats have an extra organ that allows them to taste scents on the air, which is why your cat stares at you with her mouth open from time to time.

Cats are nearsighted, but their peripheral vision and night vision are much better than that of humans.

A group of cats is called a “clowder”.

Cats have whiskers on the backs of their front legs.

Male cats are more likely to be left-pawed, while female cats are more likely to be right-pawed.

Europe introduced cats into the Americas as a form of pest control in the 1750s.

In Japan, cats are thought to have the power to turn into super spirits when they die. This may stem from the Buddist believe that cats are temporary resting places for powerful and very spiritual people.

Your cat not only rubs their head against you as a sign of affection, but they are also making you as their territory. They use the scent glands they have around their face, the base of their tails, and their paws to do so.

Cats only meow as a way to communicate with humans.

Cats can recognize your voice. So yes, they are just ignoring you.

Abraham Lincoln kept three cats in the white house. After the civil war was over, Lincoln found 3 kittens whose mother had died and took them in as his own.

Cats use their whiskers to determine if they can fit through a small space. The bigger the cat, the longer the whiskers will likely be.

The Egyptian Mau is one of, if not the oldest domesticated cat breed.

Cats spend nearly 1/3rd of their lives cleaning themselves.

They also spend nearly 1/3rd of their lives sleeping.

Cats’ rough tongues can lick a bone clean of any shred of meat.

Cats walk like camels and giraffes: They move both of their right feet first, then move both of their left feet. No other animals walk this way.

Cats’ purring may be a self-soothing behavior, since they make this noise when they’re ill or distressed, as well as when they’re happy.

Grapes and raisins, as well as onions, garlic, and chives, are all extremely harmful foods for cats. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure — although the reasoning behind that isn’t clear. Meanwhile, onions, garlic, and chives wreak havoc on your cat’s gastrointestinal system and can cause anemia.

When a cat flops over and exposes his belly, it’s not always an invitation for a belly rub. A cat does this when he’s relaxed and showing trust.

When dogs wag their tails, they may be expressing happiness. But this isn’t the case for cats! When your cat wags her tail, it’s her way of warning you that you are getting on her last nerve.

There are over 500 million domestic cats in the world.

Cats and humans have been associated for nearly 10000 years.

Cats have a whopping 32 muscles in each of their ears, allowing them to swivel their ears to hone in on the exact source of a noise. Additionally, cats can rotate their ears to 180 degrees!

1 year of a cats life equals to 15 years of a humans live.

Your cat drapes its tail over another cat, your dog, or you as a symbol of friendship.

Cats don’t see in black and white—but they are somewhat colorblind

Most cats are lactose intolerant

When I was younger I was kinda messed up in the head (a binge drinker). I once tried to get a cat, then later a dog, to drink vodka. When I put the glass up to them they'd smell it and back away quickly. I think they could sense the alcohol was poison.

essentially, to anything other than simians, alcohol literally is poison, even a little bit will kill most creatures
simians can only stand it out of the fact that they evolved to eat rotten ( / fermented ) fruit off the forest floor
those who didn't survive out of the couple million years it took us to evolve into semi-modern man, did just that, not survive

How long cats lives largely depends on their environment

Cats almost always land on their feet due to their impressive “righting” reflex

Their pee smells so bad because cats originated in the desert

Cats can hear better than humans and some dog breeds

Cats knock objects over and off edges to test for hidden prey

Cats can spend up to a third of their waking hours grooming.

Your cat’s grooming process stimulates blood flow to his skin, regulates his body temperature and helps him relax.

According to Wilde, a slow blink is a “kitty kiss.” This movement shows contentment and trust.

Cats have a unique “vocabulary” with their owner — each cat has a different set of vocalizations, purrs and behaviors.

If cats are fighting, the cat that’s hissing is the more vulnerable one, says Wilde.

If your cat approaches you with a straight, almost vibrating tail, this means that she is extremely happy to see you.

Cats can dream

Thieving behavior is not uncommon among cats. They will often grab objects like stuffed animals, feather dusters, and other things that remind them of prey.

A green cat was born in Denmark in 1995. Some people believe that high levels of copper in the water pipes nearby may have given his fur a verdigris effect.

A cat’s learning style is about the same as a 2- to 3-year-old child.

A cat’s purr vibrates at a frequency of 25 to 150 hertz, which is the same frequency at which muscles and bones repair themselves.

Cats don’t have an incest taboo, so they may choose to mate with their brothers and sisters.

Every Scottish Fold cat in the world can trace its heritage back to the first one, which was found in Scotland in the 1960s, says Cheryl Hogan, a Scottish Fold breeder and the committee chair for the breed at The International Cat Association (TICA).

It’s not uncommon to see cats in food stores in big cities as a form of free pest control.

Most world languages have a similar word to describe the “meow” sound.

Some 700 million feral cats live in the United States, and many shelters run trap-neuter-release programs to stem the population growth.

White cats with blue eyes are prone to deafness.

When Ben Rea, a successful British antique dealer and known recluse died in 1988, he left his 12.5 million dollar fortune (26.7 million by today's standards) to his cat, Blackie. Making Blackie the wealthiest cat in the world. Blackie still holds the Guinness World Record for Wealthiest Cat! The money was eventually divided equally to three cat charities who were tasked with taking care of Bliackie until he passed away.

In Holland’s embassy in Moscow, Russia, the staff noticed that the two Siamese cats kept meowing and clawing at the walls of the building. Their owners finally investigated, thinking they would find mice. Instead, they discovered microphones hidden by Russian spies. The cats heard the microphones when they turned on. Instead of alerting the Russians that they found said microphones, they simply staged conversations about delays in work orders and suddenly problems were fixed much quicker!

The oldest cat video dates back to 1894 and is called 'Boxing Cats'

Cat's, as well as other animals' noses, have their own unique print, much like a humans fingerprint.

In just 10 years one female cat could produce around 49,000 kittens. Another reason to spay and neuter your pets and help support Trap-Neuter-Release programs.

Blacks cats are often seen as bad luck in North American whereas, in the Uk and Australia, they are seen as good luck.

A Cat's jaw can't move sideways.

Cats were thought to possess psychic abilities and the ability to talk to the dead during the times of Egypt. Maybe that's why they're always staring at a distance or chasing things in the air.

Cats are often considered cleaner than dogs because dogs eat their turd, and cats don't, and cat's "wash" themselves too, by licking all over their fur.
But noone realizes that cats lick their asses while cleaning themselves and then go over their fur with that tongue. So if you pet a cat, you're getting a handful of cat asshole too.

You are not responsible for others and no one should be responsible for you.

You are responsible for yourself.

A politician is not God, your mom, or your boss.

Having a costume, robe, crown, badge, gun, or rubber stamp doesn't mean someone has the right to rule you.

Don't be a sheep, robot, or zombie.

Cats make very little noise when they walk around. The thick, soft pads on their paws allow them to sneak up on their prey — or you!

Cats can spend up to a third of their waking hours grooming.

A cat with a question-mark-shaped tail is asking, “Want to play?”

Cats find it threatening when you make direct eye contact with them.

When your cat sticks his butt in your face, he is doing so as a gesture of friendship.

Cats groom other cats — and sometimes people — in a ritual called allogrooming.

Thieving behavior is not uncommon among cats. They will often grab objects like stuffed animals, feather dusters, and other things that remind them of prey.

President Bill Clinton’s cat, Socks, was a media darling during the Clinton administration and was said to receive more letters than the President himself.

Ever wonder why catnip lulls felines into a trance? The herb contains several chemical compounds, including one called nepetalactone, which a cat detects with receptors in its nose and mouth.

More than half of the world’s felines don’t respond to catnip. Scientists still don’t know quite why some kitties go crazy for the aromatic herb and others don’t, but they have figured out that catnip sensitivity is hereditary. If a kitten has one catnip-sensitive parent, there’s a one-in-two chance that it will also grow up to crave the plant. And if both parents react to 'nip, the odds increase to at least three in four.

A train station in Southeastern Japan is presided over by an adorable "stationmaster": a 6-year-old calico cat named Nitama.

The musical Cats is based on a collection of T.S. Eliot poems called Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

Approximately 200 feral cats roam the grounds of Disneyland, where they help control the amusement park’s rodent population. They’re all spayed or neutered, and park staffers provide them with medical care and extra food.

Yes, those are normally seen as a sign for bonding and socializing with other cats. So that's what the kitty feels when you do it.

That's how cats normally communicate with each other. Like scratching and biting each other.

U can just tell the kitty to not do it a few times and they'll get it eventually. Same thing I did with my cat and she stopped eventually.
