15 years ago today I had left my Merida CX bike outside for a night, in the morning the wheels, handlebars, saddle, gruppo etc. had been stolen. Insurance paid around 80% of the complete bike's full price iirc.

At least you were insured, I am not thinking about it yet, but since a few months I am always locking up my bike when I leave it in front of a market - for years I didn't bother because for years a post about a stolen bike was a rarity, there has been a visible uptick in these since a year or two.

Been at a local village fest yesterday, started parking and locking up my bike, but I am seeing any of the 20 bikes is not even slightly secured, most just laying around, some of them nice.
Civilization hasn't arrived there yet in their little shire, lucky bastards.

Yeah home insurance is wonderful here, covers all bike thefts. But then there's no insurance company in Finland that will cover bikes damaged in a race or training, which is odd.
Here bike theft has been really common for 20 years even though otherwise everything's as safe as it gets.
