How passengers are faring as fallout of global tech outage continues

The airline chaos continues into Monday, after the CrowdStrike outage last week.
Delta Air Lines is still seeing significant delays across the country.
At around 3:30 p.m., Miami International Airport experienced 45 cancellations in 24 hours, and Fort Lauderdale International Airport experienced 37 cancellations in 24 hours, according to FlightAware. The majority of cancellations are with Delta Airlines.
“It’s been the worst experience he’s ever had,” said Jaclyn Johnson, a Palm City resident.
Johnson said her husband was supposed to leave on a Delta flight out of Palm Beach to Atlanta on Sunday at 11 a.m. After a cancellation and multiple delays, he finally left at 10:40 p.m.
“He said he had a feeling when he got on the plane that he should have just turned around," Johnson said.
When he arrived in Atlanta, he arrived to another canceled flight.
“He said it was pure chaos, people got off the plane, one lady saw the line to talk to an agent and collapsed, people were sobbing on the floors," she said.
To make matters worse, his checked bag is still in limbo while he’s driving to New Orleans.
“Between the hotels and the rental cars, and not being at work, it’s a significant loss for us financially," Johnson said.
In a statement released Monday, Delta Air Lines said it's "working around the clock to get this operation where it needs to be."
The airline said that the CrowdStrike outage impacted its most critical system, which ensures all flights have a full crew at the right place and time.
As they continue trying to reboot and repair, Delta is extending a travel waiver through July 23, providing refunds, reimbursements, points and rebooking options.

Delta CEO sees flight disruptions lasting for another couple of days

CEO Ed Bastian on Monday said it will take the U.S. carrier another couple of days before its operations recover from a global cyber outage that snarled flights around the world.
The Atlanta-based carrier has been hit hard by the outage. It has canceled over 4,000 flights since Friday, stranding thousands of customers across the country. By contrast, disruptions at other major U.S. carriers had largely subsided.
On Monday, Delta had canceled over 800 flights, or about 21% of the scheduled total as of 3:30 p.m. EST, according to data from FlightAware. It accounted for about half of total flight cancellations.
In a video message to employees on Monday, Bastian and Chief information officer Rahul Samant provided an update on the situation.
Bastian said the company is working around the clock to get its operation back on track, but it will take another couple of days before the worst is over.
"Today will be a better day than yesterday and hopefully Tuesday and Wednesday will be that much better again," he said.
The company's shares closed down about 3.5% at $43.83.
About 60% of most critical applications that Delta uses are Microsoft Windows based, and were rendered inoperable early on Friday following CrowdStrike's faulty Windows update, the airline said.
Delta's IT teams required to manually repair and reboot each of the affected systems, with additional time needed for applications to synchronize and start communicating with each other.
But its crew tracker application - which ensures all flights have a full crew in the right place at the right time - is requiring the most time and manual support to synchronize, Delta said.
"Everything except that critical system is up and running," Samant said. "And that is what we're working on feverishly."

Investigation of Deepwater Horizon Explosion, Mike Williams
Mike Williams, Transocean chief electronics technician and survivor of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion, testified before investigators to recount his memory of the event. Providing information regarding the gas detection system and general alarm system, in this testimony he said that key alarms were turned off prior to the explosion that led to the oil spill.
This was the fifth day of the third session of hearings of the Deepwater Horizon joint investigation held by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOEM) into the circumstances surrounding the explosion, fire, pollution and sinking of the Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit Deepwater Horizon, with multiple loss of life in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. David Dykes and Captain Hung Nguyen co-chaired.

Grassley Releases Newly-Obtained Video, Records in Aftermath of Trump Assassination Attempt | U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa

WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today released bodycam footage of local law enforcement and United States Secret Service (USSS) personnel responding to the scene of the shooter in Butler, Pennsylvania. The video was obtained from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit in compliance with congressional requests.

The footage records Beaver County and USSS officers gathering facts and recapping a timeline of events leading up to the shooter’s attempt against former President Donald Trump.

The video confirms:
Local law enforcement saw the shooter prior to his presence on the roof.
Local law enforcement shared pictures of the suspected shooter with USSS, raising questions with respect to exactly when the pictures were shared.
Law enforcement lost track of the suspected shooter.
Law enforcement sought access to a drone to secure the water tower after the shooting.

Grassley said the following regarding the records release:

“For the past 10 days, questions have only been building regarding the catastrophic security failure that occurred on July 13. Federal agencies, particularly the Secret Service, have failed to be transparent with the American people. This assassination attempt is a matter of signifcant public interest, and the public’s business ought to be public. I’m releasing these records as part of my efforts to get answers and hold agencies accountable.”

I write to you to again request the Secret Service operational security plan, and related records, for the July 13, 2024, campaign event held by former President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. My office has received records related to the apparent location of some law enforcement posts during the July 13, 2024, event to include Butler County and Beaver County Emergency Services Units (ESU) with assignment at the AGR building. My office has also obtained the below color-coded document indicating what appears to be some state law enforcement sectors for the Trump rally and the document notes each sector is highlighted by “order of importance.” Is this document accurate? Did local law enforcement have the shared responsibility with Secret Service to cover the AGR building? To better understand the full security posture of the event, the Secret Service must provide equivalent records.

Additional records I’ve obtained show that a Secret Service Counter Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operator was on the personnel list assigned to the July 13, 2024 event, and then-Director Cheatle testified yesterday that “there are times during a security plan that the Secret Service does deploy an asset like a drone.”[1] Yet, it’s reported that the gunman flew a video capable drone over the event site hours before former President Trump took the stage, which may have helped him plan the attack.[2] Is that reporting accurate? Is the below document accurate?

On July 16, 2024, I wrote to DHS and the Secret Service requesting information and records about the catastrophic security failures that resulted in the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt on former President Trump, which resulted in one person being killed and two others being seriously wounded.[1] On July 20, 2024, I provided DHS and the Secret Service portions of emails relating to “post standers” and requested to know the total number of post standers at the Jill Biden and Trump events on July 13, 2024, as well as the total number of federal personnel present at the Trump rally. Recently, I have also obtained video footage of the aftermath of the shooting, in which local law enforcement can be heard discussing drone availability to clear the water tower.[2]

The Secret Service must provide its operational security plan showing the locations and roles of all federal personnel assigned to secure the July 13, 2024 event. Please provide answers to the following no later than July 30, 2024.

Did USSS, local, or state law enforcement deploy UASs or counter UASs for the July 13, 2024 rally? If not, why not? If yes, provide a detailed description of their use.
Did the USSS receive requests from local or state law enforcement agencies to operate UASs and/or counter UASs before or during the July 13, 2024, event? If yes, did the USSS approve these requests? If not, why not?
Was there an unauthorized UAS intrusion within the restricted airspace of the event? If so, when? Please provide all records.[1]
Was the Counter UAS operator aware of the intrusion and when? Did the Counter UAS operator deploy countermeasures in response to the unauthorized intrusion? If not, why not? If yes, provide records of the countermeasures deployed.
Who at USSS was responsible for making the final decision to deploy UAS or counter UAS for the July 13, 2024, event?
Provide all records between and among USSS, local law enforcement, state law enforcement, sheriffs, and federal law enforcement related to the use of UAS and counter UAS for the July 13, 2024 event with former President Trump.
Since January 2021, has the USSS deployed UASs or counter UASs during campaign events and rallies? If yes, provide a detailed description of their use, including but not limited to the date, location, event, protectee, and number of UASs or counter UASs deployed.
Provide all DHS and USSS guidance, policies, and similar documents concerning training requirements for UAS and counter UAS and a detailed description of the training.
Was the water tower cleared in advance of the rally? If not, why not?
Did the water tower have any role in the events at the Trump rally? Please describe.

The 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful acknowledged, too, that she has smoked marijuana and inhaled a subtle jab at former US President Bill Clinton who said he smoked the drug but did not inhale.

She suggested that her Jamaican father’s side of the family would be disappointed in her if she did not support the legalisation of marijuana.

But according to the news website Jamaica Global Online, Donald Harris has “categorically” disassociated himself and his family from “this travesty” and slammed his daughter for stereo-typing her heritage for political gain.

Phantom skies: A U.S. RQ-4B drone was lost over the Black Sea

The U.S. Air Force’s RQ-4B Global Hawk reconnaissance drone went off the radar during a mission above the Black Sea, near Crimea. This incident, reported by RIA Novosti based on data from Flightradar as of June 4, has raised some eyebrows.
Reports indicate that the high-altitude drone, marked with flight number 10-2045 and call sign FORTE12, took off from NATO’s Sigonella Air Base in Italy. It navigated through Bulgarian airspace, heading towards the Black Sea to perform reconnaissance in the Crimean Peninsula’s special operation area.
However, as of now, neither RIA Novosti nor Flightradar have provided additional details about what transpired. The Russian Ministry of Defense has also refrained from commenting on the incident.
Earlier, on May 26, an RQ-4B Global Hawk was detected in the Black Sea near Sochi. As per its trajectory, the UAV had taken off from NATO’s Sigonella naval base located on the island of Sicily. By 3:00 PM Moscow time, it was spotted near the coastlines of Krasnodar Krai and Crimea.
In March 2023, Reuters reported that the U.S. had resumed reconnaissance drone operations over the Black Sea following an incident where an MQ-9 crashed into the water. It was noted that on the same day, an RQ-4 Global Hawk conducted a reconnaissance flight in the area. CNN also confirmed this flight, referencing data from the FlightRadar24 service.
Earlier that month, a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone had crashed into the Black Sea west of Crimea. According to an initial statement by the U.S. European Command [USEUCOM], a Russian Su-27 fighter jet allegedly clipped the drone’s propeller with its wing during an interception, leading to the crash in international waters of the Black Sea. However, the Russian Defense Ministry maintained that the plane neither used onboard weapons nor made contact with the drone.
RQ-4B Global Hawk
The RQ-4B Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance [HALE] unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] developed by Northrop Grumman for the United States Air Force. It is primarily used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance [ISR] missions. The Global Hawk provides real-time, high-resolution imagery of large geographic areas, making it a critical asset for military and humanitarian operations.
The dimensions of the RQ-4B Global Hawk are impressive. It has a wingspan of approximately 130.9 feet [39.8 meters], a length of 47.6 feet [14.5 meters], and a height of 15.3 feet [4.7 meters]. These dimensions allow the UAV to carry a variety of sensors and communication equipment while maintaining stability and endurance at high altitudes.
The propulsion system of the RQ-4B Global Hawk consists of a single Rolls-Royce AE 3007H turbofan engine. This engine provides the necessary thrust for the UAV to reach its operational altitude and maintain long-duration flights. The engine’s efficiency contributes to the Global Hawk’s ability to stay airborne for extended periods, with a maximum endurance of over 32 hours.
Technical characteristics of the RQ-4B Global Hawk include its ability to fly at altitudes up to 60,000 feet [18,288 meters] and a range of approximately 12,300 nautical miles [22,780 kilometers]. The UAV is equipped with advanced avionics, including a GPS-aided inertial navigation system, and can operate autonomously or be controlled by ground operators.

Huh. Can't buy books from General Flynn either. Well that's a let down. Wanted to buy two of his books and get 12 months of Proto but for some strange reason payment information on those two sites says my address is invalid for the payment information. It's not. Just bought some plastic to glue together so it has to be the payment platforms they're using.
