1871 Treaty between U.S. and Britain
Alabama Claims
Alabama claims, maritime grievances of the United States against Great Britain, accumulated during and after the American Civil War (1861–65). The claims are significant in international law for furthering the use of arbitration to settle disputes peacefully and for delineating certain responsibilities of neutrals toward belligerents. The dispute centred on the Confederate cruiser Alabama, built in England and used against the Union as a commerce destroyer, which captured, sank, or burned 68 ships in 22 months before being sunk by the USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg, Fr. (June 1864).
At the outset of the war, a Federal blockade of Southern ports and coasts automatically extended belligerent status to the Confederacy. To protect its own interests, Britain took the lead among European countries in proclaiming its neutrality (May 14, 1861). The Confederacy immediately set about building a navy to engage the Union’s naval power and to destroy its merchant marine. Along with several other ships, the Alabama was built or fitted out privately on British territory and put to sea despite the belated intervention of the British government.
As early as October 1863, the U.S. minister to Great Britain, Charles Francis Adams, protested that the British must take responsibility for the damages caused by British-built Confederate raiders, but he conceded that his government would be willing to submit the matter to arbitration. Amid bombastic U.S. threats of annexing Canada, Anglo-American misunderstanding was exacerbated after the end of the Civil War by unsettled disputes over Canadian fisheries and the northwestern boundary. A proposed settlement in the Johnson-Clarendon Convention was angrily rejected by the United States. To avoid further deterioration of Anglo-American relations, a joint high commission was set up, and on May 8, 1871, the parties signed the Treaty of Washington, which, by establishing four separate arbitrations, afforded the most ambitious arbitral undertaking the world had experienced up to that time. In addition, Great Britain expressed official regret over the matter.
Certain wartime maritime obligations of neutrals, already agreed to in article 6 of the treaty, were outlined in the principal arbitration of the Alabama claims, meeting at Geneva, as follows: that a neutral government must use “due diligence” to prevent the fitting out, arming, or equipping, within its jurisdiction, of any vessel believed to be intended to carry a war against a power with which it was at peace and to prevent the departure of such a vessel (the substance of this clause was included in article 8 of the 1907 Hague Convention) and that a neutral must not permit its ports or waters to be used as a base of naval operations for similar purposes. In addition, on Sept. 14, 1872, the tribunal voted unanimously that Britain was legally liable for direct losses caused by the Alabama and other ships and awarded the United States damages of $15,500,000 in gold.
This settlement gave new impetus to the process of arbitration, which had been latent for many years.

🚨BREAKING: IMRAN KHAN REMOVED BY US STATE DEPARTMENT DUE TO UKRAINE WAR | IS THE U.S BEHIND KHAN’S ARREST?

Days following his arrest, which many compare to the TRUMP INDICTMENTS, new leaks show potential U.S involvement in Khan's removal from office and recent arrest.

TODAY'S LEAK:
A classified document has surfaced, revealing that the US State Department exerted pressure on the Pakistani government to depose Prime Minister Imran Khan due to his neutral stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The meeting between the Pakistani ambassador to the US and two State Department officials occurred on March 7, 2022, a month prior to Khan's removal from power through a no-confidence vote.
During the meeting, State Department official Donald Lu expressed considerable concern about Pakistan's position on Ukraine, emphasizing that if Khan continued in office, challenges would persist. Lu also cautioned that Pakistan might face isolation from Western allies if the situation remained unresolved.
In response, the Pakistani ambassador expressed frustration with the lack of engagement from US leadership, highlighting a perception that the US sought Pakistan's support on significant matters but did not reciprocate.
The conversation concluded with Lu acknowledging that damage to the relationship was real but not insurmountable. He suggested that without Khan, the relationship could return to its previous state.
Following the meeting, Khan's opponents in Parliament initiated crucial procedural steps leading to the no-confidence vote.
Although the State Department denied meddling in Pakistan's internal affairs, the leaked cable has raised doubts about the U.S’s role in Khan's ousting from power.
US GOVERNMENT'S REJECTION
The State Department firmly refutes Lu's alleged urging of the Pakistani government to remove the prime minister. On April 8, 2022, in response to Khan's claim about a cable supporting his interference assertion, State Department spokesperson Jalina Porter dismissed the claim's accuracy, stating, "Let me state unequivocally that these allegations are entirely baseless."
Coincidentally, diplomatic relations between the US and Pakistan have improved, and there have been reports of military equipment manufactured in Pakistan being used in the Ukraine conflict.

The EPA Wants To Run A FAKE Industry That Produces NOTHING And Expects American Taxpayers To Pay For It

As if Americans have not suffered enough from an oppressive third world totalitarian regime who is destroying the American economy, weaponizing the Justice system to attack the First Amendment of the US Constitution - free speech, as well targeting political opponents, allowing illegals with polio and tuberculosis into the United States to spread deadly disease, ordering social media companies to censor their users for dissent, bullying business owners for defending their right to stop looting and theft in their stores, banning basic appliances Americans use to live their lives every day while bringing the US into the brink of an unwanted highly dangerous and unpopular world war, now this oppressive third world totalitarian regime wants to create a fake industry that will in no way benefit Americans at all, while usurping land and having taxpayers pay for it! We all know in America today, we no longer live in a free market capitalist country where the old traditional yet very basic concept of "supply and demand" is applied anymore. Well the EPA is making it very clear with this new stupid move.

The top lobbying group for US power plants penned a lengthy letter to President Biden's Environmental Protection Agency, arguing that the administration's aggressive plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions from natural gas-fired plants is "unworkable" because it relies on "unproven technologies."

Edison Electric Institute (EEI), whose members include Consolidated Edison Inc., Dominion Energy Inc., FirstEnergy Corp., and Southern Company, said the EPA's "rulemaking record simultaneously downplays the various infrastructure challenges to deploying" carbon-capture systems (CCS) and hydrogen, "while overplaying the current state of deployment and demonstration of each technology."

EEI continued, "Given these realities, neither CCS nor hydrogen blending are adequately demonstrated today as they are not deployable, available, or affordable across the entirety of the industry, and the attendant supporting infrastructure will take more time than EPA predicts to deploy. This assessment factors in the timelines that EPA proposes for standards that may not be applicable until several years in the future. Accordingly, unit owners and operators have significant concerns about the achievability of the proposed standards."

EEI's members power the homes of nearly 250 million Americans and operate in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The power industry supports seven million (7,000,000) jobs nationwide, and EEI's members invest $140 billion annually into improving the grid.

"As we outline in these comments, electric companies are not confident that the new technologies EPA has designated to serve as the basis for proposed standards for new and existing fossil-based generation will satisfy performance and cost requirements on the timelines that EPA projects," the letter pointed out.

The EEI membership warned: "This will impact electric companies' efforts to deliver affordable and reliable electricity to customers."

The race to decarbonize the power sector has already left the nation's largest grid, PJM Interconnection, with increasing reliability risks.

Putin Approves New Laws To End Online Anonymity, Curtail Free Speech, Driving Away Innovation & Investors

Russian President Vladimir Putin has enacted a series of legal amendments that could spell the end of online anonymity, curtail free speech and stifle innovation.

The amendments, officially titled Federal Law No. 406-FZ, were approved by Putin on July 31 and take effect immediately, with some provisions slated to come into force before Christmas 2023.

The law requires individuals to provide verifiable proof of identification before gaining access to Russian online platforms. As part of this crackdown on online anonymity, foreign email systems are set to be banned with stringent measures slated to take effect by the end of this year.

The use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) remains permissible, but any content that promotes their use for evasion purposes is now considered a criminal act.

Furthermore, the internet hosting services of Russia require state registration and adherence to strict guidelines. The Russian government seeks to "enhance its customer service and security" (aka revealing identities to spy on them in real time) – thus, hosting companies are now mandated to identify potential customers using approved procedures and are held accountable for the content on their platforms. This will no doubt destroy the faith in online communication, rendering many sites to completely shut down and drive many Russians into living much of their lives completely offline.

By September 2024, only companies listed on the state-managed register will be eligible for use by public entities, while "computing power" and "information systems" will be restricted (wtf?).

The new legislation, passed under Federal Law No. 406-FZ, is set to have far-reaching implications for both internet users and businesses. It could stifle creativity and potentially push entrepreneurs to leave the country.

The banning of foreign email systems would limit user access to only state-approved email services. This action limits choices and access to global communication platforms.

While VPN providers are not outright outlawed, posting information online that advises users on circumventing the state-approved identification mechanisms using tools like VPNs or Tor will be deemed a criminal offense. This presents a chilling effect on discussions around privacy and tools to safeguard it.

The legislation also brings hosting companies under strict government scrutiny. This threatens the independence of hosting services and exposes them to potential liability for the content posted by users on their platforms. Many platforms are likely to close access to Russian citizens, and many Russian platforms are likely to close altogether.

The introduction of these amendments has raised alarm bells about the future of the Russian internet landscape. Critics argue that these measures could push internet entrepreneurs to either fall in line with the government's agenda, go offline or leave the country altogether. The stifling of free speech and the invasive surveillance of online activities threaten to drive away innovators and investors.

A week after the incident, experts at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), which co-owns the camera, claimed on Twitter that the green light originated from radar on the NASA satellite ICESat-2. But a week later, NAOJ revised its theory, saying that based on the trajectory, it was unlikely the lights were coming from NASA’s satellite after all.
The Daqi-1 was launched in April. The satellite has LIDAR (laser imaging, detection, and ranging) for detecting atmospheric aerosols and carbon dioxide. Daqi-1 also measures nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, and fine particle pollution. Lidar uses laser beams for mapping, and it’s believed that these lasers illuminated the sky over Hawaii in January.

The centre is already undertaking clinical trials in what could be a world-first vaccine against Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever – a tick-borne virus with a case fatality rate of around 30 per cent. The virus is endemic in parts of Africa and Asia and has become an “emerging pathogen” in Europe, fueled in part by the spread of ticks. The UKHSA has increased surveillance of pathogens carried by vectors such as ticks and mosquitoes in recent years as average temperatures have climbed. “The risks are growing around climate change and urbanisation,” Prof Dame Jenny Harries, the UKHSA chief executive, told the Telegraph. She added: “As well as building on the legacy of the pandemic caused by Covid-19, VDEC will target a wide range of other deadly viruses and pathogens, helping to secure the health and prosperity of the UK and saving lives around the world.”
The latest update of the UK National Risk Register, released by the Cabinet Office last week, judged another pandemic one of the highest risks in terms of both likelihood and impact. Experts say the new facility at Porton Down, set deep in Wiltshire’s countryside and one of the most closely guarded pieces of land in Britain, is a reaction to that. “VDEC will play a vital role in delivering the 100 Days Mission, an important initiative to make sure the world is better prepared for the next pandemic by accelerating the development of diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines so that we can control new threats before they have the impact that Covid-19 has had,” said Professor Isabel Oliver, Chief Scientific Officer, UKHSA. The new unit at Porton Down holds samples of some of the most deadly pathogens and has several “Level Four” laboratories – the highest security category. Only twenty of the UKHSA’s scientists have clearance to work in these facilities. Chain-link fences topped with barbed wire mark its perimeter, while CCTV cameras cover every angle inside and out. The walls are sterile and white, and marked with red hazard signs. Clad in gowns and gauntlets, dozens of scientists were working across the centre’s air tight facilities when the Telegraph visited last week. It was the same team who last February sequenced the samples of 800 contacts of three patients who were discovered with Lassa Fever in the UK. The haemorrhagic fever was imported from West Africa, killing one of the three patients – a newborn baby. The outbreak was contained, but Porton Down scientists warn the arenavirus family of viruses in which Lassa sits have “pandemic potential”. The team is working to create tests or “assays” for a range of arenaviruses for use in diagnosis, contact tracing and vaccine design in future outbreaks.
In a level three laboratory, we watched as scientists scan samples of XBB166, a new Covid-19 variant currently circulating in the UK. Since the pandemic, the number of scientists working on vaccines at the UKHSA’s Porton Down site has grown by 50 per cent. But it is new technology that’s really allowed the work to scale.
In the first Covid peak, the centre was only able to test 100 blood samples a week to monitor virus’s spread – a factor that is blamed by many for hindering the UK’s response. Now, however, 3,000 samples can be tested each week. Dr Hallis said this capability would have a huge impact on lives if another pandemic was declared. “At the start of the pandemic we were asked by the JCVI what vaccines to use. We were only working with 100 samples a week but now we can do 3,000. So now we would be able to get that data much quicker to the government to allow them to make decisions faster,” said Dr Hallis. The team is also optimistic AI will speed things up further if another pandemic takes hold. “AI will help us identify virus mutations and it will give us a much speedier way to repurpose antivirals and therapeutics,” Dr Hallis told The Telegraph. “With Covid, all our treatments weren’t new, they already existed. AI could have helped identify the treatments earlier.”
The new facility will feed into the global “100 day mission”, launched in 2021 under the UK G7 presidency. The idea is that by doing the scientific groundwork early, an effective vaccine should be available within 100 days of a new outbreak – whatever the pathogen.
“For previous vaccines, it took five to ten years [to develop], for Covid it was under 365 days, so 100 days is really stretching it, but that’s what the vaccine centre is designed for,” said Prof Dame Harries.
So do the scientists think the UK is ready for the next pandemic and how do we compare to other nations?
Prof Dame Harries said that while the UK is facing “many infectious disease threats” she believes it is “better prepared for another pandemic now”.
“What we have here [in terms of expertise and facilities] is significant compared to Europe,” added Dr Hallis. “The US has more – but the strength of what we do means partners in Europe and the US keep coming back to us here rather than asking people in their own countries to do it.”
However, Dr Oliver warned such new capabilities should not be taken for granted. “We had to build and strengthen our capability in the middle of the pandemic. A video of a man on social media has blown up after he said that some straight men can be, and are, attracted to "trans women who haven't had bottom surgery." He is a certified sex therapist.

Dr. Joe Kort, the man in the video, is the founding director of the Center for Relationship Health. He has a webpage and his own podcast, Smart Sex, Smart Love.
