The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife
Mara had married the lighthouse keeper for the view, and the view that night was everything — rain lashing the glass, the beam sweeping the black water in slow, golden arcs. But it was the man who drew her eye across the kitchen table, sleeves rolled to the elbow, a half-uneaten pie cooling beside him. She crossed the room without deciding to, and he looked up with that slow, dark smile that had cost her three arguments and her composure every single time.
"You've been staring at me all dinner," he said, and his voice was lower than usual, rough around the edges like the cliffs outside.
"You've been staring at me back," she answered, and she set down her teacup — a small surrender, a door left unlocked — and sat on the edge of the table beside his knee. He took her hand in both of his, calloused and warm, and the rain came down harder against the window as if the night itself had leaned in to listen.
She kissed him standing in the kitchen, one hand fisted in his shirt, and he lifted her off the table without a word, the way he'd done a hundred times but the way that never got old — that first breathless second where gravity forgot them. He carried her up the stairs, and she wrapped her legs around him, and the lamp between the bed and the window caught his face in gold.
There was the long, careful tenderness first — fingers learning the map of her shoulders, the slow pull of his mouth down the line of her neck — and then the hunger that had been building all evening broke loose. He lifted her onto the narrow bed and she arched into him, breathless, the sheets tangling, the lighthouse beam sweeping across them in slow pulses like a second heartbeat. Outside the storm raged, but in there the world was just two bodies and the heat between them.
When it was over, he laid her down and covered her with the quilt, and she watched him through half-closed eyes as he pressed his forehead to hers, neither of them speaking. Somewhere below, the lamp turned its patient arc across the water, and the rain kept falling, and she thought — not for the last time — that the view had been the least of what she'd married.
