Generation 5 General. Anon 09/23/2021 (Thu) 23:15:12 [Preview] No. 7886
Welcome to /g5g/, /endpone/'s offical Generation 5 thread! Love or it hate it, the fifth generation is almost upon us and thus necessitates a new thread.

I have no idea how this will work compared to the old FiM threads. Provisionally this thread will be for the movie and Season 1 of G5. If enough discussion is generated a separate thread will be made for each season like normal.

Hopefully we can at least some fun and enjoy some side aspects of this even if it turns out poor or more likely, mundanely average over being worthy of hype or hate.

I fully expect it will be weeks, maybe months before I physically see the movie.

But don't avoid spoilers on my behalf, it won't ruin it for me.

I guess the 4chin thing would be to play "...what's her name again?" For each of the mane cast.
Come to think of I bet they're already doing that, aren't they? No, I don't want to go and look I have enough idea cancers eating my mind already.

Also, Twibooru has this to offer the #5G tag.
So, obligatory 'whats his name, again?' post also.

Last I checked it was all doom posting and infighting with some enjoying it on the side. Though I didn't stay for long.

For those who are looking for watching the movie, you can already have a few download links on Yayponies (both on 720p and 1080p, 1,3 GB and 2,2 GB respectively). Besides, /mlp/ has been delivering a few programmed streams so anyone can have a blast in the chat and shitpost anything that pops up in the minds of anyone.

I've got about two thirds of it, so will probably try watching it tomorrow night.

Twibooru implies Sonny meets Spike, and he's not the spike we remember. Interesting thought, though maybe the meeting is just implied, set for a season-one-finale topic.

Okay, yeah I've seen it.
There are two major questions the movie raises and never addresses.

The first I believe is earth pony magic. Except it's still present in nascent form, with Hitch, whom all animals fall in love with.

The second though, is Izzy. She can see "luminescence" and I think I caught her making one or two other otherworldy-ish assertions about the inner workings of this Equestria. Is she a mystic, and that inner sight is why she could retain happiness and joy amidst the dour, fatalistic culture of Bridlewood?

the download for me lasted about half an hour or so for the 1080p version (although I will delete it as soon as there are other MLP streaming sites that have it uploaded on the cloud)

>The first I believe is earth pony magic.
from being the most underpowered race, now the game has turned around. Although the unicorn master race expression might still apply here (namely because of Izzy and what you present later here in this post)

>Is she a mystic, and that inner sight is why she could retain happiness and joy amidst the dour, fatalistic culture of Bridlewood?
I cannot answer this question because I haven´t watched the movie yet.Is she a descendant of the royalty or something? Because her concept could turn into a very juicy plot device for explaining her context in a future episodic arc.

Anon 09/30/2021 (Thu) 21:39:21 [Preview] No.7914 del
I mostly think the story ends well, that is there's no burning question about what will happen in the series. So, not a 90m pilot just an introduction to the characters.

Most of my burning questions are about what's left of equestria. The Maretime history teachers say there was a great war in which they drove off the predatory pegasus & unicorn armies.

And the implication given by a few small details, is that these are the only three towns left an all the Earth. That was a pretty brutal war if, "a thousand years" later this is the whole of their once great civilization.

I have one comment, though, in keeping with a much earlier post of mine.

>>6024
>this is about accidental alicorns

Rather than a friendship-spell upgrade, she has ethereal, thaumaturgic-energy only accoutrements. Do they turn off when she goes to sleep? Is she subject to losing her status if Alphabittle feels snubbed by Phyllis?

Or, I guess, let me know when you guys have seen it so I can avoid being vague about what happened to who.

What I mean is, what the hell happened to Twilight and her perfect kingdom. Did she fall in battle? What of the other alicorns? What of the other pony races or races in general? That is the main thrust of my interest personally. If we get a alright enough pony story that will be just bonus for me. For the record, I think it is okay, a B-, it is good for what it is but not fantastic.

That is driving me as well I suppose. Perhaps in a slightly more negative way of seeing if they mess anything up. Truth be told I am uncertain how lore heavy this will be but it'll be interesting to see what hints they leave us. Alright, just saw G5. First impressions are good, better then it could've been. I am moderately more bullish on G4 and connections to FiM but I still think it'll be restricted by a more "kid friendlY" mainstream tone. The movie certainly isn't very woke (I mean, FiM even in early seasons hit stronger plot points then this), but was woke framed, which is a term I am coining now to explain what happens when something is put through a double lie of being presented as woke while not being very woke (but I mean this distinctly from Disney putting Queer Characters and having them kiss in the background and trying to present it as a mildstone). I... I'll have to write a mini essay on this later.

Anyway, I will try to get out a full review some other time soon for details. Simplied condensed version is: Pipe Weakest Character. Suprisely avoided toxic LOLRandom tone with Izzy. Sunny is good. Hitch is okay. Zipp of all may have been the most complex and most well done for breif introductions. Locations I am mixed on. Zephyr Hights if it is built on top of Canterlot is cool. Bridlewood felt a little dull compared to what it could be but I am interested in why the unicorns are there and not Canterlot (kicked out by Pegasi?) and Maritime Bay was blandish. Animation is uncanny at points but only with some characters. I still dislike modern tech but it itself isn't the reason to dislike this on it's own (more on that later too).

>Zephyr Hights if it is built on top of Canterlot

I kinda thought it looked like dragonspire mountain; the one that yielded the 'hop skip & jump' song is S1.
Also none of the architecture looked like it came from Canterlot, so either all of Canterlot was flattened by the great war, or this was built from scratch in another location with Pegasus leanings from the get-go.
Or both are true, again sticking to FoE lore and the ledge where Canterlot was built got knocked off the mountainside, leaving later Pegasi to build on their remembered-capital city's spot with land that was quite a bit craggier than before.

Well, I am going to let both CB Anon and Bridgefag discuss about the lore so I am not going to offer much more than what Bridgefag is going to raise eventually with more details >>7925

I must admit that the movie is fun and I have watched it twice...

yet I do have genuine suspicions that this movie is looking eeeerm, more European than expected.

If we want to get obsessed with politics, I suppose that this movie goes a liiiiittle (just a ""little"") bit overboard with Europeans. I mean, maybe (just ""maybe"") we should stop building up the 4th Reich (aka the European Union) by simply not buying the VolkSSwagen cars and closing the borders with the Germans so they cannot come here and thus, they wouldn´t visit the Southern countries during the summer (that´s a genuine punishment)

Because yeah, we might get too motivated and spread hate racist propaganda by moving our heads up and down while we are listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit like angsty teenagers and turn the EU into the fascist Empire for conquering the entire world. The car number plate reveals it all (though I have to figure out the PN initials)

So, yeah,we go right back to the 20th century and we will have to LARP as fascists now (Sprout Cloverleaf did nothing wrong)

PD:The number plate states that we are fans of sports so, we don´t only love them 4ever, but 5ever instead. If ponies get to play soccer in this gen, you don´t have to look into the reasons behind it very much...

Anon 10/03/2021 (Sun) 22:05:27 [Preview] No.7932 del
Fun fact: the movie was released on the same day in which Nevermind got its 30th anniversary. Coincidence? I don´t think so.

Anyway, shitposting aside, what do i have to say about this movie?

I am not going to dive into the details here nor offer very strong arguments here. Just a few comments on it and then, I will decide if I continue the posts.

The setting changes vastly and we find ourselves with a world that relies more on tech than FiM and the animation looks pleasant on some characters but it doesn´t always translate too well and thus, we are left with some faces that...well, could be worthy meme material. Uncanny and maybe too human-like. While it doesn´t bug me, it exists and we could associate this kind of style on other movies from Illumination studios or Dreamworks. The unique appeal of gen 4 has been lost but as soon as we knew that this was purely on 3D, we all expected something like this.

What I would like to focus the most here consists in the influence of FiM towards the franchise in general. I have always thought that 2010 represents the year zero for MLP and thus, it would change the nature and direction of this franchise forever. My fears have absolutely vanished and instead of reducing the market to little girls like Hasbro attempted to do with the first 3 (3.5) gens, gen 4 settled the golden standard for the nature of what makes MLP to be judged as MLP.

Despite the numbers, gen 5 stands as the genuine sequel that follows gen 4. Not only in terms of timeline, but in terms of nature and the business approach. The movie, while it abandons the 2d flash animation, the callbacks and especially, the style of writing is truly reminiscent of gen 4. This movie combines parts of Mare in the Moon (the broken bridge, the moment in which Izzy helps Sunny so she doesn´t fall on the mountain with her horn), School Daze-Raze and the Ending of the End (racism against other species), The Beginning of the End (with the 3 crystals), Magical Mystery Cure (Sunny´s transformation) and Hearth´s Warming Eve (conflict among pegasus, unicorns and earth ponies without being narrated as a fairy tale).

Not only that but the main cast...at least 3 of them repeat pretty similar patterns that we got in gen 4. Sunny follows the nature of Twilight (especially when she says to the others that she has made things worse, those same lines happened in the 2017 movie and in several two parters when Twilight felt sorry for failing with her plans), Zipp follows the same nature of Rainbow Dash (her looks instantly give away her tomboyish charisma) and Izzy follows the humorous nature with her careless (yet not over the top) attitude that was displayed with Pinkie Pie.

I have held many fears that Hasbro wouldn´t care all that much nor put much effort into the gen and just follow the cheap formula of marketing towards little girls but...it seems that gen 4´s legacy has become permanent with this movie...which is a very good sign despite the different directions that they might take with it. They are follow more the industry standards than falling behind the industry with a toy commercial that would fill up the cartoon channels for a quick cash-grab.

We aren´t going to get another gen 4 but for sure, the nature of MLP is heavily (if not absolutely) influenced by the writing delivered in the 2010s. Gen 4 has opened a path that would arrive at a point of no return (the real turning point of this franchise as a whole) and with this movie, it seems that said nature surpasses gen 4 itself.

I thought the old station looked Canterlot like, though I suppose it still ain't quite enough to pin it to Canterlot.

>so either all of Canterlot was flattened by the great war
A great war makes so much sense too me. I mean, with the levels of paranoia and hatred, plus how we had the Pegasi in the fancy aristocratic city while the unicorns where in exile depressed among the trees, but noooooooooooooo, all these towns appeared to exist before the split. I don't discount some violence but I think this is just set far in the future. Timeline though feels more hard to place then with FiM's. I mean, part of me says the station shouldn't be too old yet with how things like the Castle of the Two Sister's standing intact for over a thousand years with still books intact and just dusty it could be a long time.

I wonder how long it is from the age of Twilight Sparkle? It seems like it should be a good bit with the way they talk. If they say it was a "thousand years" then that could leave some dark implications for her over Celestia's reign. I hope she didn't pull a Jake Skywalker!

You are indeed correct.

>Because yeah, we might get too motivated and spread hate racist propaganda by moving our heads up and down while we are listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit like angsty teenagers and turn the EU into the fascist Empire for conquering the entire world.
I think the movie went overboard with it. Don't they know that the EU is the home of fascism and genocide? My goodness, I didn't see it before. You better watch out L23 listening to Smells like Teen Spirit may make you unleash your inner Franco and start another white terror. Really? That would surprise me if they actually planned that for that but it would even be more surprising if it was just a coincidence.

>we are left with some faces that...well, could be worthy meme material.
Oh boy, lips don't work on ponies. I thought Izzy was the worst with this unfortunately.

As for posting some more pre formal review thoughts, I think my best response/adding to what you say here is this: I don't think this is FiM, I think it is still pretty good ways away from it, but when you see people rant about modern media having no "soul" well, this didn't have a full soul but some sparks that leave me thinking this next stage of the ride may not be so bad. I couldn't believe Izzy wasn't memey and hyperactive as much as naive and happy go lucky. The little main 6 cameo and other little possible nodes that you point out:
> This movie combines parts of Mare in the Moon (the broken bridge, the moment in which Izzy helps Sunny so she doesn´t fall on the mountain with her horn), School Daze-Raze and the Ending of the End (racism against other species), The Beginning of the End (with the 3 crystals), Magical Mystery Cure (Sunny´s transformation) and Hearth´s Warming Eve (conflict among pegasus, unicorns and earth ponies without being narrated as a fairy tale).
It seems a bit of the spirit of FiM is there. It seems there is a bit of soul here. Just as much though, the shadow of formulaic corporate marketing and possible social justice remain (again, though, this is not a really woke work, so much as one that is framed as such, I really need to explain this better in detail).

I could see this go wrong in a million ways. I could see the series be entirely meme marketing. Izzy and Pipp being written as too Pony Life style meme and shitposting machines and writers taking the series and try to make Sunny a literal woke activist. Even if it doesn't, I could see them trashing the mane 6's legacy in some way, possibly with your hero's aren't completely good message (though unlikely with the admiration they displayed and how it would be stepping on the toes of the previous series) or having something like Twilight Sparkle return in a sad husk of her former self. I am not going to put caution to the wind on any of that.

But the fact that this didn't leave a completely bitter taste in my mouth and that I could even have the chance to enjoy this passively means it has already exceeded my expectations.

>We aren´t going to get another gen 4 but for sure, the nature of MLP is heavily (if not absolutely) influenced by the writing delivered in the 2010s. Gen 4 has opened a path that would arrive at a point of no return (the real turning point of this franchise as a whole)
I wounder if we will be like Transformers with a couple of series that take place in the same continuity and then a bunch of reboots that mix the elements of G4 with new stuff and old and retellings and new expansions of older lore aimed at older fans that often disappoint!

>If they say it was a "thousand years" then that could leave some dark implications for her over Celestia's reign. I hope she didn't pull a Jake Skywalker!

or better yet, show up amids gen 5 and become the one that brings the wings to Sunny Starscout. It doesn´t end there because Twilight is more generous than her predecessor by also giving her a horn as a bonus. Twilight´s reign might have already end or will end in this gen...but the tradition of Larson, by giving wings to the successor is eternal.

>I unironically want to trigger someone with this line.

it´s been a long time since i have seen it. I haven´t resorted to it in the past, with much less versatility to find the proper time to use it. This time has turned out to be the first proper moment to express it. I understand the frustrations to use deliberately and still fail to see the right moment to use it. If you manage to carry it out successfully, you´d better relish that moment.

>Don't they know that the EU is the home of fascism and genocide?
you can say that again. You´d better avoid classical music unless that you want to raise your kids as fascist. Beethoven was the root of all the evils that has been occurring around here.

>My goodness, I didn't see it before.
This is what happens when isolationism doesn´t work anymore. The little demons grow and they eventually take over. You could have prevented this.

>You better watch out L23 listening to Smells like Teen Spirit may make you unleash your inner Franco and start another white terror.

but, hold on...we aren´t talking about the average fascist terror. Nah, that´s for plebs. Here, we have our own special cover for propagandistic purposes. Considering that we are talking about the nationalcatholicism, we have to keep in mind that there are two utterly terrifying elements that make this version of SlTS a little bit more unique and absolutely scary: the Spanish guitar and singing Kurt Cobain´s lines with Gregorian chants.

That´s a genuine fearsome act that shouldn´t become a reality...in theory...

>The United States has already abandoned it's obligations to spread social justice to the world settling instead for liberalism in one country... so things could get pretty bad.
and even with that move, you failed to provide enough american social justice around here, Bridgefag. I guess that we didn´t get enough Pretty Woman TV airings for keeping our minds under control. You will have to spread Hollywood movies with more intensity than this because we see that transmitting said film 157 times on TV hasn´t been effective enough for its population. You only had one job with that strategy, I would have aired it over 9000 times instead.

well, those concerns are up to the company´s choices for making profit. At what cost is Hasbro willing to mess it up in order to appeal to a specific fraction of people and alienate other parts of its possible targets that could provide tons of money and momentum to the franchise? Keep in mind that even by playing with pink capitalism, they have to deliver a fertile product in order to milk it (as we have seen with FiM). The moment in which they are rewarded with effortless cash-grabs or just care about the money from investors who are simply interested in spreading a very specific agenda, then they will go to the direction that you fear.

Uncertainty always comes into play but at least...
>But the fact that this didn't leave a completely bitter taste in my mouth and that I could even have the chance to enjoy this passively means it has already exceeded my expectations.

...they cannot ruin this moment from you anymore. At least, that´s what you have been able to get from this.

>I wonder if we will be like Transformers with a couple of series that take place in the same continuity and then a bunch of reboots that mix the elements of G4 with new stuff and old and retellings and new expansions of older lore aimed at older fans that often disappoint!

As long as it prints money for them and they can squeeze everything from it, they will attempt to go for that if it works for economic reasons. Whether they disappoint or not with that strategy, it will depend entirely on the effort or charm that they make for said productions. But yeah, nothing (except huge losses of money) prevents them from making a move like that. We have seen that with gen 3.5 and Pony Life.

Most likely,Hasbro will follow that path at some point. It is just a matter of time.

I'm going to have to disagree. That is, I thought this was actually a pretty good transition to 3D, and there really was only one spot when I thought (yes, it was Izzy, see attached) that she maybe over-emphasized her lips.

But that speech style is in keeping with her character. Or as she says in the forest, "maybe my sparkle is a little too bright.

What isn't too bright is my use of FFmpeg on the CLI -- I thought Sunny would be more nearly in even the cropped portion but, she says her lines off screen her.

> you´d better relish that moment.
It was more out of a thought to punish Hasbro and it's stupid woke framing on it.

>You´d better avoid classical music unless that you want to raise your kids as fascist.
The classics, the actual western canon... Lot of Eurpean stuff needs to be gotten rid of. Unfortunately I guess that means the Pegasi have to go with their Roman aesthetic... Wait, where were we, Oh, yeah, G5!

I will get to this in my essay (I think...)

>Most likely,Hasbro will follow that path at some point. It is just a matter of time.
It would be funny if we get official adult aimed comics and storylines, I am uncertain of full adult in the same way Transformers has, but I could see them trying more stuff.

>>7944
>What happened to the crystal ponies?
It is actually a really interesting question as they are intimately connected to the Crystal Heart and the Crystal Empire in a way that is different from the other races. Could the Crystal Empire still exist and be going with the Crystal Heart? Hey, the Crystal Heart seems to be playing a similar roll to the Crystal Ponies as the other gems, elements of harmony (?) were implied to have for the other races.

Part of me still is uncertain with these secondary races getting a answer but it would be cool if we got one.

>>7950
And it seems I am in the minority on pony lisps. I will say though that I was overall impressed with some moments of the animation, just the lisps weren't one of them.

Oh, my use and skills with FFmpeg I bet are far more lacking!'
